This is the history of France during the reign of Napoleon. Although the revolution brought with it new laws and some semblance of representative government, there are places that never change: the dark hole known as the prison. A boy named Gais is sent to this hell. The crime is murder and the sentence is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
However, Geis is innocent of this crime. He lived his life as he always did: running around the city and stealing to survive when he was caught by a policeman. Before he realized what was happening, he was accused of a crime he knew nothing about, tried before a dishonest judge, and found guilty of a terrible crime. But who was killed and why?
In prison, Geis must endure a world of violence and betrayal as he desperately fights for survival. Within this world of fear and hatred, he persistently seeks justice for himself. He finds help in the most unexpected places - from alcoholic lawyers and mentally ill people in prison with him.
He eventually begins to realize the extent of the diabolical conspiracy he has become entangled in, but even as he tries to uncover the truth, he despairs over what he has lost. And every day he fights for dignity and survival, while the powerful circles that placed him here look on with a smirking smile. "I just want to be free..."
Will his strength and determination be enough to pierce the hearts of his cellmates? Can he finally uncover the truth and find salvation?
